Smut and how it’s improved our sex life, Part 2

Updated: Feb 28, 2022

Forget whiskers on kittens. One of my favorite things? Reading erotic stories, whether full-length novels or short one chapter fan fictions.

A few of you have mentioned to me privately that you were awaiting my smut recs, and I’m truly fearful I’ll disappoint or you’ll realize how secretly lame I am. Okay, who am I kidding? It’s no secret. *shrugs* But I promise that I will bear my soul to you all by the end of this post and give you a list of Molly’s Smut Picks.

I shared in Part 1 of this series that I have discovered that reading erotica on a regular basis has been akin to throwing lighter fluid on my libido. Reading about hot sex makes me think about hot sex, which makes me want hot sex. And when I say it makes me want “hot sex,” it doesn‘t mean I‘m expecting to have wall sex (we have yet to find a way to make this work well) or to do it on the counter (that sucker’s cold!) or in a public restroom (*gagging*). What it comes down to is just this: reading well-crafted, graphic depictions of sex makes me aroused. And since I happen to be in a committed relationship with a partner who for some reason still finds me alluring and wants to get down and sweaty with me 20 years and 3 children later, I’ve got a natural outlet for whatever pent-up “energy” I may have accrued over the course of the day.

Reading smut is just one of several habits that I’ve stumbled upon that stokes that side of myself. Because what I’ve discovered about myself is that when it comes to arousal, I’m more of a slow cooker. I need to set that pot on low and let it simmer all day if I want everything ready when I need it. In contrast, PM is more of an Insta-pot. Turn it on, and your meal’s ready to go in twenty.

So, what do I read? It’s not a simple answer. It has changed over time and is largely dependent on how chaotic my life is at the time. Do I have the energy and time to put into a novel? Or do I just want some short steamy stories that I can read while I wait for Two‘s bus to arrive?

So yeah, I read the Fifty Shades trilogy back in the day, as so many of us did. And I might have read it more than once. And yes, I may have even read E. L. James’ revisit of the first novel from Christian’s POV (Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian). But whatever.

Then I discovered Diana Gabaldon's Outlander, which I suppose isn’t outright smut per say. It’s more one of those come-for-the-sex-stay-for-the-story sort of reads. I found the sexual chemistry between Claire and Jamie riveting. And then they made it a television series… hot damn. Sam Heughan as a young Jamie — season 1, specifically — he is smokin’. That voice. That jawline. That ass. And that hair — floppy curls do things to me and I just want to fist it and direct that face right where I want it. *clears throat awkwardly*

Ummm…where was I? Right. If you don’t mind a fantasy sci-fi theme and haven’t checked it out, definitely worth a read — while it is lengthy, the sex is pretty hot (especially in the first book).

And while I could still go ahead and purchase full-length erotic novels, I have discovered that there is a plethora of free content online these days, enough to keep me in smut-heaven indefinitely. From erotic fan fiction (a favorite about which I‘ll say a little more about below) to original works, you can find smut to suit your own tastes and needs, ranging in length from less than 1,000 words to multi-chapter or even multi-installment stories. Whether I want my smut mixed with romance and fluff, or maybe with some tears and angst, or perhaps as just some PWP (porn without plot), online amateur erotic fiction comes in an array of lengths, themes, and preferences.

Why choose amateur erotic fiction when there are presumably many full-length, well-edited, published works with sexual content? Firstly, this mama is busy and is often surrounded by chaos, and with a toddler in the house, I’m interrupted constantly. It’s friggin’ difficult for me to commit to a 300-800 page novel. I also love the variety that I’ve found online and the fact that many platforms and authors not only categorize their works but also provide additional content tags or allow me to filter search results so I can find the exact brand of smut that will do it for me.

A major con of amateur writing is that, as expected, a lot of what’s out there is just plain bad, whether in the story-telling or the writing itself. Sometimes I find a story that’s pulling me in, but the author’s use of grammar and punctuation is atrocious, and that’s a major turnoff for me. Or maybe their use of smutty language is just off somehow. I can’t really explain it, but you know good smut when you read it. Of course, what's "good" for me won‘t necessarily do it for someone else. So would-be smut readers just need to dive in and look around.

So where do I find my smut?

In addition to free videos and articles, Bellesa, an ethical “porn company run by women,” has a section on their site that is dedicated to erotic stories.

They have a wide variety of free stories, with categories such as Romance, Beautiful Strangers, and Long Time Coming. Bellesa also has several “premium e-books” available for purchase (most for less than $5), although I haven‘t read any of these myself.

Tiffany Reisz, a published romance and erotic fantasy author, has short erotic stories available for free on her website. See my Smut Picks below for a few of my favorites. She also has several short erotic audiobooks available online for free. I have not read any of her published novels, but I may check them out in the future.

If you’d prefer to listen rather than read (and also to not have to weed through amateur writing disasters), you can pay for a subscription to Dipsea, an app like Audible but for erotica. I have not used this app personally, as audio isn’t the best mode for me with a toddler often playing close by (that and I often prefer the written word as it allows more room for my imagination), but for less than $4/month ($50/year) it looks really interesting. If anyone has any experience with this app, please drop a comment below and let me know if you like it.

At some point I stumbled onto erotic fan fiction (or fanfic). What is fan fiction? “When someone takes either the story or characters (or both) of a certain piece of work, whether it be a novel, tv show, movie, etc, and creates their own story based on it” (source: Urban Dictionary, by Mistaki, August 7, 2006). By diving into the world of fan fiction created from stories and characters that I’m already familiar with, I can fast track right to the smut that I want without having to read too much story set-up or plot development. My favorite site for erotic fan fiction is Archive of Our Own, where I can easily customize my searches.

Through the site's Search field, I can filter works to include specific fandoms (e.g., Outlander) and indicate relationships I'm interested in reading about (e.g., Jamie Fraser/Claire Beauchamp) and specify the rating (Mature or Explicit, or if you're looking for something more fluffy and less graphic, try General or Teen and Up).

I have found that there are erotic works written for virtually any novel, show, or movie that I’d want to read about. So if you have favorite fictional characters or couples, see what's out there to spice up your afternoon.

Two quick notes about my Smut Picks: I tried to keep my choices on the steamier side, but there are plenty of works out there that are less explicit and more romance-heavy. And I want to apologize that I don't have any female/female erotic stories listed here. The stories included in my list were simply gleaned from my own bookmarked favorites that happened to not include any F/F relationships. But F/F stories are easily found at any of the sites I listed above.

And without further adieu...

Molly's Smut Picks (2022 edition)

From Bellesa:

Dream Come True, by Eva Monroe, is a quick, sexy 7-minute short, about a dominant partner who finger teases his partner through the course of a public event, and written in the second person to make you into one of the participants. I’m a sucker for a confident alpha-male type, so the dom character here fits the bill for me.

Wading In, by Rachel Woe, is about a 20 minute read and tells the story of a woman who, after a tough-go following her divorce, finds the courage to make a steamy connection with her sexy new neighbor.

From Archive of Our Own:

My picks from this site are all smutty fan fictions, but I’ve tried to only pick stories that don’t necessarily require familiarity with the original works. So don’t be put off if you haven’t read the book or seen the TV series.

Like Horses, by Outlander_Geekery, reads in about 10 minutes and represents an imagined extra scene from Outlander, where Claire introduces Jamie to a new sex position. Explicit and hot. 'nough said.

How Will I Know, by CrosswordDreamer, is another Outlander fanfic, but this one that reimagines the characters in a new setting, where Jamie is an Orthodox priest (*fans herself*) whose world is turned upside down when he meets Claire, a flower shop owner who is not religious and 8 years his senior. This is about a 1 hour and 20 minute read, and while the author has not completed the work yet, it's a great romantic, erotic read as is.

Red Triangle, by PetraTodd (one of my favorite smutty fan fiction authors), is a fun 12-13 minute read. Its story is based on the television show Sherlock (BBC) and has Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson, and pathologist Molly Hooper going undercover at a sex party where Molly has a hot night she won't soon forget. I honestly wish PetraTodd would write a followup chapter to this, because this short sexy fanfic is one of my favs.

The List, by conchepcion, is another sexy BBC Sherlock fan fiction that features Sherlock and Molly Hooper. The author's summary: "When an interview with an anonymous female claims that Sherlock Holmes is an amazing lover - Molly Hooper instantly knows it is fake. She is then shocked to find Sherlock present her with a list he wants to complete with her assistance." This one's got just a little bit of angst, which makes the happy ending that much sweeter.

Temporary Madness, by ashesandhoney, is a lovely, multi-chapter male/male/female (M/M/F) threesome-turns-throuple story, with romance and fluff and witty banter sandwiched with lots of dirty smut. Will and Jem decide to spice up their relationship by bringing Tessa home as a one-night stand, but they all get a lot more than they bargained for. It’s probably about 7 hours of reading time and does have an overarching romantic plot arc, but it can easily be read in chunks, with many of the chapters working fine as standalone erotic episodes. It considered a fan fiction as the characters are loosely based upon the main characters from Cassandra Clare’s Infernal Devices series, but the story itself (and its setting) is not dependent on Clare’s novels.

Fever When You Kiss Me, by PetraTodd, is another Sherlock Holmes and Molly Hooper fan fiction, but this one’s a bit different — the characters being reimagined within Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics. If you’re unfamiliar with A/B/O or Omegaverse stories, they’re an erotic fiction subgenre that Wikipedia defines as “premised on societies wherein humans are divided into a dominance hierarchy of dominant 'alphas', neutral 'betas', and submissive 'omegas'. These terms are derived from those used in ethology to describe social hierarchies in animals.” As expected for this subgenre, these stories have a primal edge to the sex, which I find very hot. This particular work by PetraTodd reads in about 20 minutes.

An Evening in Madison, by Archilune, is very smutty, multi-chapter piece based on A Discovery of Witches (book series, now a television adaptation). Vampire Matthew Clairmont and witch Diana Bishop spend a steamy night together in her family home. It takes about 45 minutes to read all the way through, but given that it’s really just porn without plot, you can easily read it in single chapter snippets. This story is written from Matthew’s POV. (Not sure why, but I have a special love for fanfic erotica told from the male character’s point of view.)

From TiffanyReisz:

The Mitzvah, by Tiffany Reisz, tells the sweet and sexy story of a wife comforting her grieving husband in one of the best ways she knows how. I love the tenderness between them in the lead up and then the silly playfulness in the bedroom. This story is about a 16-17 mixture read. If you enjoyed this couple as much as I did, The Teacher takes place at the beginning of this couple's relationship.

The Assistant, by Tiffany Reisz, is a steamy 12-13 minute read. Ivy has it bad for her boss, and one night she sneaks into a kinky party (think Eyes Wide Shut) where she knows he’ll be in attendance. It‘s not quite romantic, but it’s naughty and hot.

From Literotica:

Note that I went back and forth on whether I would recommend this story here, as it’s not a light story and definitely not the happy ending I prefer. So before you check it out, know that it is quite intense and dark at times. Tales from Old Shanghai 01, by ChloeTzang, tells the story of Chuntao, a young Chinese woman in Shanghai of the 1930s — her sexual awakening and how she found the love of her life only to ultimately lose him when she had to turn to prostitution in order to survive. It's a longer read (maybe 6 hours). The author writes superbly, it's quite well-edited, and I found the story compelling. While it starts slowly, it gets very hot before it turns dark, which is what kept me reading even though I knew that the resolution would be less than happy. So not an easy, fluffy read if you get through the entire story, but an amazing, steamy story just the same. (If you want to to stick your toe in but get out before the story takes a tragic turn, don’t go past page 21.) This author has another 66 stories on the site, and I'll definitely be checking out her other works in the future.

I hope you enjoy checking out some of my smut recommendations. Ultimately, my list represents just a small sample of the variety available online, but I hope that it can serve as a jumping off point for my readers to find what gets their pots a-simmering. To each his (or her or their) own, so if nothing I've recommended here floats your boat, rest assured, there is smut out there for you.

Until next time, stay kinky 😉
